Yeast infections are the most common medical conditions that women seek care for.

This type of bacterial growth can be genetic and/or exacerbated by certain lifestyle choices. Yeast infections are 100% treatable-from serious to mild cases of the growth-if the right medical attention is sought and adhered to.

What are Yeast Infections?

Yeast infections are fungus overgrowths most predominantly found in the vagina.

Yeast infections are characterized by a certain kind of fungus-called Candida Albicans, and can grow for a variety of reasons: from hereditary predispositions to stress, pregnancy, certain types of medicine, immune system deficiencies, or lifestyle choices. Moreover, yeast infections can also occur in the lungs, bronchi, on the skin, in the mouth, or under your nails-though it is most common that yeast infections develop in warm, moist areas of the body such as the vagina.

Symptoms

Yeast infections are a type of Vaginitis, and are characterized by mild to intense itching and rash associated with the infected area.

Typically, a mild to moderate yeast infection also yields a white, pasty vaginal discharge. If the condition is severe, the yeast infection can cause inflammation of the infected tissue that will present itself as red, swollen, and possibly bleeding.

Diet Recommendations

Though seeking medical attention is always best, in many cases, a mild yeast infection can be cured with changes in diet.

Moreover, keeping to a few simple dietary recommendations may severely limit your susceptibility to getting yeast infections. The most common of dietary recommendations for aiding in the prevention and treatment of mild to moderate yeast infections are listed below:

Limit sugar intake.
Studies have shown that limiting the amount of refined sugars from your diet can greatly reduce your chances of getting a yeast infection.

Limit processed foods.
Limiting processed foods is another great inhibitor of the occurrence of yeast infections.

Limit saturated fats
By limiting saturated fats from your diet, you will not only improve allover body function and processes, but studies have shown a great reduction in the severity and occurrence of yeast infections in subjects who did.

Limit artificial sweeteners
The regular use of artificial sweeteners in a daily diet has been linked to the appearance of regular yeast infections.

Limit dairy
This is true in only some cases, but studies have shown a slight connection between limited dairy intake and the likelihood of yeast infections.

Lifestyle Recommendations

Though medical advice is always best from your physician, in many cases, modifying some of your lifestyle choices and habits can help limit the amount of yeast infections you experience.

Here are the most common and best advised recommendations you can make to your lifestyle to help reduce yeast infection occurrence:

Wear cotton underwear and tights
Cotton underwear is by nature, more breathable than nylons and other fabrics used for underwear. In doing so, you ensure more ventilation is allowed; and this, in turn, will limit your yeast infections.

Investigate antibiotics used
In many studies, certain kinds of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and corticosteroids used have been linked to the occurrence of yeast infections found in women. Talk to your doctor about whatever antibiotics or pills you may be taking to see if there is alternative treatment to help you limit the occurrence of yeast infection.

Vitamin Supplements

In many cases, certain vitamin supplements have been proven to be effective in treating and preventing the occurrence of yeast infections.

Here are some of the most commonly recommended vitamins used to supplement a healthy diet and lifestyle:

Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Lactobacillus Acidophilus is a vitamin supplement that can be found in pill, powder, or yogurt form; and introduces lactic acid into the vagina in order to eliminate and protect against infection. This supplement works by creating good bacteria in your vagina to thwart bad bacteria-such as Candida yeast-from growing.

Boric Acid
Boric Acid is also used in the effective treatment of yeast infections. Studies have shown that the use of boric acid suppositories in women who suffer from chronic yeast infections, dramatically reduce the occurrence of infection.

Herbal Supplements

Another common way to treat occasional or chronic yeast infection is through the use of certain herbal supplements.

Here are some of the most commonly recommended herbs used to supplement a healthy diet and lifestyle:

Cinnamon
Studies have shown that the regular inclusion of cinnamon in a woman’s diet can aid in treatment of mild to moderate yeast infection. Cinnamon contains significant chemicals that have powerful antifungal properties, thus limiting the development of a mild to moderate yeast infection.

Tea Tree Oil
Another common herbal supplement that has been linked with limiting fungal growth in women is tea tree oil. Regular use of tea tree oil as an herbal supplement has been shown to limit yeast growth in both the mouth and vagina.

Oregano
Oregano oil has been studied to also limit the growth of yeast in women experiencing occasional and chronic yeast infections.

Propolis Extract
Though lesser known, Propolis extract has been studied to help treat those affected with yeast infection of the mouth-Thrush-by topical treatment. Studies have shown that regular use of Propolis extract-applied to the mucous membranes in the mouth-severely limited the growth of yeast as well as prevented further outbreak of the infection.

Echinacea
Echinacea and other immune system building herbal supplements are known to help limit infection of any kind in the body-and this extends to the yeast infection. Physicians recommend the building and maintaining of a strong functioning immune system is key to avoiding yeast infections.
