A great deal of focus has been placed on improving the health of kids around the globe. While kids remain active, the average weight of children has been steadily on the rise.

And with increase weight can cause increased health problems to develop both today and in the future. Many of the habits we have today as adults were formed during our childhood. So, if you are looking to build a healthier lifestyle for your children both today and in their futures, review the tips below and incorporate them into your daily routines.

1. Set Realistic Expectations
While you may be able to monitor and plan the meals that you serve within your own home, kids will have a variety of choices available to them at school, when they are visiting a friends' home or when they are out in the community. Unhealthy snacks are abundant. So, if you are striving to teach your children healthy habits that will be sustainable, teach them about how to make strong food choices in a variety of situations and settings. Teach your children how to select foods from a typical restaurant menu, how to decipher what a healthy snack is from an unhealthy snack and how to choose appropriate food portion sizes. While you want your kids to enjoy food, you also want to teach them skills to make smart choices about the foods they eat.

2. Be Persistent
It is inevitable that your kids will veer off track every now and then regarding their food choices. It may even be possible that you will get off track as your schedules become busier and busier. Or, you may have young children that don't seem to like eating anything that you put in front of them, particularly those foods that are healthy. The best thing to do is to be persistent. Don't make alternative meals for your children. Instead, experiment with different food groups and flavorings until you find foods that they will enjoy and that are good for them. Stay focused on teaching your children a healthy lifestyle and work to ensure that you remain dedicated to a healthy eating lifestyle within and without of your home.

3. Add Color
Many children's foods are often white and colorless; chicken, macaroni and cheese and fish sticks. When you prepare white foods, there is often a reduction in the overall health value of the meal to your child. To improve the quality of the meals that your children eat, add color. You can bring colorful fruits and vegetables to every dish that you prepare at home. You can even employ tricks such as blending foods together in order to include healthier items in the menus that you serve your kids. When you are dining out, consider taking your kids to a salad bar, as there is a tremendous amount of healthy options to choose from, often spanning the entire color spectrum of the rainbow.

4. Pay Attention
Learn what flavors your kids like and which ones they do not. Then, work to incorporate those flavors into the meals that you prepare. For example, if your child likes sweeter foods, you may consider serving sweet potatoes or even cooked carrots above other food choices. By learning your children's flavor palates, you can incorporate healthy options into your menus that they will actually enjoy.

5. Make it Fun
Include your children in the overall food process. Take them to the grocery with you and teach them how to select healthy food options from all of the options available. Work with them to design their own meals and then work with them to prepare them. The more involved that you can make your kids in the processes surrounding food, the more they will learn about food in general, how to prepare foods and how to make better choices overall.
