Many individuals suffer from depression. As a matter of fact, most individuals experience depression at some point in their life.
Just because a person may experience depression once in a while doesn't mean they suffer from a mental disorder. Depression is a natural part of life. However, there are those that have mental disorders that need treatment. Sometimes a cognitive, or non-medicated, approach is used to treat the depression. Even nutritional changes and exercise can make a difference when it comes to depression.

But it is important to keep in mind that depression is more than just a bad day. Depression affects your mood and your physical health.
Everything that you do when depressed is affected, which is why it is important to do what you have to do to make sure you can get rid of it as soon as possible.
Causes
There are many causes to depression. Stressful events can cause a person to become depressed. When under a lot of stress, a person may feel like they have no way out.
When a person feels like there is no way out of a stressful situation, they start to feel hopeless. Depression may also be caused by certain health conditions, such as a low thyroid. In this case, the situation can be rectified by treating the thyroid issue.
But there is a different type of depression that may need to be treated with medications. That depression is suicidal depression. Antidepressants are the medications of choice. When a person takes an antidepressant, it is supposed to level out their mood. Because depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, the drugs bring balance back to those chemicals. This means that certain situations and even stress can be managed better.
It is important, however, that one realize that depression can be caused by internal and external factors.
Depression that is caused by internal factors is when there is a chemical imbalance within the brain. External factors include those things that cause you stress, such as work, relationships, and the such.
The symptoms
As for the symptoms, you have probably experienced one or more of them at some point in your life.
You may find that you are really tired and are lacking a lot of
energy, that you are easily agitated, you may find that you
have lost interest in a lot of the things that you enjoy, you may
think of death, and you may even feel worthless. Some with
depression also find that they are unable to sleep well. Then
there are those who simply those who cannot get out of bed
at all. They keep their head under the sheets all of the time
until they feel like moving.
Treatments
There are many ways in which depression can be treated.
You've already read about the use of antidepressants to treat depression, but there are also herbal supplements that may be used. Some feel that natural interventions are the best anyway. These natural interventions include herbal teas, herbal supplements, and even changes in diet.
When changing diet, you want to leave out things that can change the mood. Such substances include caffeine and alcohol. Although caffeine can make you feel wonderful for a short period of time, you will find that you will crash after a certain period of time. This crash can literally be depressing. When it comes to alcohol, alcohol is a depressant. You want to avoid this because it can take a while to get yourself out of an alcohol induced depression.
When taking nutritional supplements to help depression, you want to make sure you take plenty of folic acid, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and omega-3 fatty acids.
In other words, you want to make sure you get the proper nutritional intake because this is what is going to make you healthy inside and out.
If you're in good physical shape, this improves your mental clarity. Everything goes hand in hand. This is why you also want to exercise. If you exercise, you are going to feel really great. This has a lot to do with the fact that exercise produces a natural high and a natural high is much better than an artificial one.
But if you find that your depression is due to a physiological issue, you may wish to look into psychological counseling.
Counseling has shown a great deal of success for individuals suffering from depression. Talk therapy has shown to be very effective because of the fact it helps get to the root of the problem. Getting to the root of the problem is, perhaps, the best form of therapy rather than using medication to mask the issue. It is true that some individuals will still need medication because of biological factors within their bodies, but it isn't always necessary. It is important to make sure it is necessary before actually prescribing the medication.
So if you find that you suffer from depression or you have an occasional bout of it, it is important that you do what you can to make sure you can conquer it.
Natural methods are the best methods possible, so try those first. You don't have to live with depression. You don't have to have those dark moments of hopelessness and you don't have to feel like there is no way out of your situation. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, although it is hard to see when you are down in a slump. With the right lifestyle changes and the correct treatment, you can conquer it.
