It is called amenorrhea when a woman has not started her menstrual cycle by the age of 16, but there is also secondary amenorrhea.

Secondary amenorrhea is when a woman’s menstrual cycle stops.

Both of these are serious issues because that means that there is some underlying reason that has led to the fact that a woman’s period has never started or the fact that it has suddenly stopped without menopause being a factor.

Usually, amenhorrheic women have low levels of female reproductive hormones. This low level of hormones is not sufficient enough to make a woman have her period. This is sometimes caused by malnutrition, or too much exercise. Both of these place nutritional demands on the body. This is why a woman with an eating disorder may say that her menstrual cycle has stopped. She has deprived her body, so the hormones responsible for ensuring her period starts are completely compromised.

There has also been a connection between stress and amenorrhea found. Nevertheless, disorders of the ovaries may be an issue, hypothalamus issues may be an issue, and disorders affecting the pituitary gland.

When you notice a chronic absence of your menstrual cycle, it is very important that a physician is able to evaluate the situation. This is so the cause can be pinpointed and the cause can be treated.

Usually, it is about making lifestyle changes that really make a difference of whether or not a woman is able to start or resume her menstrual cycle.

Amenorrhea that lasts too long can end up causing issues such as osteoporosis. This is one reason why women going through menopause are at risk for osteoporosis. Her menstrual period has stopped because of reduced sex hormone production. And since the bones respond to that hormone production, the lack of hormones can compromise the bones.

Now, there are times in which amenorrhea may be normal. One instance is when a woman is breast feeding. But this is a case in which the bones are not at risk. And it is true that a pregnant woman will cease to have a period, but this is not considered amenorrhea. Since the baby is occupying the uterus, laws of nature keep a woman from having a period.

There are some supplements or other treatments that a woman with amenorrhea may be prescribed by her doctor.

She may be prescribed progesterone, since that is the sex hormone that is responsible for making sure her period is on time each month. There has also been some evidence that calcium and vitamin D may help, acetyl-L-carnitine, Vitex, Zinc, Motherwort, Vitamin B6, Yarrow, Rue, Partridge Berry, and blue cohosh may also be used to help balance things out and bring them back to normal.

As for the symptoms, the absence of a menstrual period may not be the only thing that you experience.

You may also experience decreased pubic hair, increased facial hair, shrinking breast size, a deeper voice, and may notice a discharge from the breasts.

The way to really make an impact in this is through dietary changes. What you eat can have a significant impact on the hormones within your body.

Again, this is why eating disorders can cause a menstrual cycle to stop. Even some women who are incredibly athletic may experience a change in their menstrual cycle. Some women, after adding a nutritional beverage to their diet each day, noticed that their menstrual cycles resumed. So sometimes the nutritional deficiency may not be that incredible. It may just be a matter of adding certain nutrients on to that diet.

Vegetarians, in particular, have been known to have amenorrhea. This is because it results in weight loss and there are certain nutrients that are not taken in. There are a lot of nutrients within meats that are crucial to an individual’s diets. Although vegetarianism is a choice, the human body was made to eat meats in order to ensure proper nutritional intake. However, this doesn’t mean a vegetarian woman has to give up her lifestyle. As a matter of fact, she can continue her vegetarian lifestyle.

It is true that there are some very nutritional aspects to this type of diet, so it is nothing to stop. It is just important to make sure the nutrients that are normally acquired through meats are acquired through other means. For instance, an individual can eat beans to receive some of what they do in meats. But is also important to keep in mind that vegetarians tend to have a high level of carotenes in their diets and a high level of carotenes has been associated with amenorrhea.

Moderate exercise has also been shown to have a positive effect on women who have amenorrhea. But why is that when there are so many athletic women with amenorrhea?

Well, this has a lot to do with the demands that are placed upon athletic women. They have certain diet restrictions and they are required to exercise well beyond a moderate level. Their bodies become severely nutritionally challenged, which is why they have problems. When you have a proper diet and you exercise, then what you are doing is preventing amenorrhea, stopping it, and you are also lengthening your life. By having a healthy lifestyle, you live longer. You also prevent and slow down a lot of diseases that can bring you down. So take this into consideration when wondering how to get rid of amenorrhea.
